The Camberwell Bilingual Advantage

French-English Bilingual Education

Why Choose Bilingual Education?
Foundation students focused on classroom activities at Camberwell Primary School

Learning through a language other than one's home language offers cognitive benefits that support students to develop a long term advantage for future success. These include:

  • enhanced problem solving
  • risk taking in their learning
  • enhanced metacognitive and metalinguistic skills

This bilingual benefit increases every year that a student engages in bilingual education, gradually strengthening their learner capabilities of resilience and perseverance, ensuring greater capacity to face challenges and find solutions in their everyday life. We consider the opportunity to have engaged in an effective learning pathway as the best option for our students - where kindergarten, primary and secondary align to embed this cognitive advantage.

By choosing bilingual education, you are providing your child with a powerful cognitive tool that provides a quantifiable, long-term advantage for future success.

Fostering Global Citizenship

Our bilingual education naturally cultivates global citizens. We encourage students to develop an understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures, fostering empathy and preparing them for an interconnected world.

Our Partnerships

Our Networks

A unique learning environment within the Australian educational landscape, we benefit from forming strong links with schools that deliver a similar model of bilingual immersion. Our team works closely within bilingual networks to ensure that we continue to deliver cutting edge curriculum in a bilingual setting.

The Australian Association of French-English Bilingual Schools (AAFEBS)

The Australian Association of French-English Bilingual Schools (AAFEBS) was formed in 2015 under the leadership of the Cultural and Cooperation Counsellor, the COCAC. The purpose of this international network is to collaborate with like-minded schools, sharing best practice in a supportive environment that drives outstanding learning outcomes for our students.

Bilingual Schools' Network

A vibrant network of Victorian bilingual schools offering a range of different languages working together in recognition of the benefits that our unique model of education offers students. Our BSN both advocates for our Department to recognise bilingual schools and the specificity of their model and provides essential professional learning unique to our setting for teachers in bilingual settings.

Making meaningful connections for our students

In a monolingual educational culture, L'Ecole Primaire de Camberwell strives to provide meaningful opportunities for students to connect with others learning in French language environments.

Partnering with other bilingual schools

L'école primaire de Camberwell / Camberwell Primary School has established a partnership with Killarney Heights Primary School in Sydney since 2022 with term based shared events at every year level. In this way our students not only have the opportunity to use French in meaningful ways with other French speakers but also enjoy an annual tour where each school's Year 6 students have the opportunity to visit their new friends in their school.

Sister Schools

Establishing a Sister School with New Caledonia

We are currently establishing a sister school with l'école Guy Champmoreau in New Caledonia with our first tour since COVID planned for our Year 5 students in 2027!
